Finding Comfort in the Familiar
By Joseph Cutler
“The older I get, the more I understand why people become emotionally attached to their favorite chair.”
— Joseph Cutler

Our longing for familiar comfort points us to God, who is our unchanging and ultimate refuge.
It's interesting how things change as we move through life. What seemed so simple when we were younger can take on new meaning later on. I've been thinking a lot lately about comfort and what it really means to feel settled and at peace.
I’ve noticed that the older I get, the more I understand why people become emotionally attached to their favorite chair. It’s not just about the chair itself, is it? It's about something deeper. That favorite spot becomes a place where you can relax, where you feel safe, and where the world outside seems a little less demanding. It's a place where you can just be.
We all long for places and moments like that. A favorite chair, a quiet corner, a specific walking path – these aren't just objects or locations. They become symbols of refuge and rest. They offer a sense of belonging and predictability in a world that often feels unpredictable. When everything else is shifting, having something steady, something familiar, can be a great comfort.
This longing for comfort and a safe place reminds me of how God wants to be for us. He is our unchanging refuge. He’s like that favorite chair, always there, always ready to welcome us when we need to rest. We can always come to Him, no matter what is happening around us. He promises to be a steady comfort and a sure resting place.
Maybe the question is, where do you find your truest comfort? What does it mean for you to truly rest? Do you have a place, or even a practice, that helps you feel that deep sense of peace and safety?
It’s a beautiful thing to find comfort in the familiar, especially when that familiarity points us to the One who never changes. He offers a peace that goes beyond any comfortable chair, a peace for our hearts and minds, no matter what. He is our truest and most comforting refuge.
My Final Thought
Take a moment today to consider where you find your rest and comfort. Remember that God is always ready to be that familiar, unchanging presence for you, a place where your heart can truly find peace.

God is infinitely greater than our finite comprehension, and embracing this mystery invites us into a dynamic, ever-unfolding relationship with Him rather than a static understanding.

God promises to hear you when you call upon Him, and He will answer you, showing you things you don't yet know. This means you have an open line of communication with God for all aspects of your life.

Life has seasons of 'red, yellow, and green lights' that are part of a greater, purposeful rhythm. Finding peace means trusting this rhythm and using each season constructively, especially the pauses.
