Faith and Forgiveness

When Faith Moves Mountains and Hearts

When Faith Moves Mountains and Hearts

Our faith in God's power to move 'mountains' is deeply connected to our willingness to forgive others, creating an open channel for answered prayer and God's grace.

It's interesting how some moments just stick with you. Sometimes, you say something, and then later, you see the surprising result of those words. That's a bit like what happened one morning with Jesus and His friends.

They were walking along, and Peter pointed out something quite remarkable. He said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you spoke to yesterday has completely dried up!" It was withered from its roots, gone. Jesus had spoken words, and those words had made a big difference to that tree. This moment gave Jesus a chance to teach them, and us, some powerful truths about faith, prayer, and forgiveness.

He told them, and us, to "Have faith in God." He then painted a picture that might sound a little wild at first. He said, "If someone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him." This isn't just about moving a physical mountain, though God could certainly do that. It's about remembering that no problem, no obstacle, no challenge is too big for God. When we face something that feels like a huge mountain in our lives, Jesus is telling us that with faith, God's power can make a way.

Then He connected this faith to prayer. He said, "Whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." This isn't a magical formula or a way to get everything we wish for. It's about trusting God's goodness and His plan. It's about knowing that when we pray, we're talking to a God who loves us and who is able to do amazing things. Our prayer isn't about making God do what we want, but about trusting Him so deeply that we believe He will act, in His wisdom and love.

But Jesus didn't stop there. He added something very important, a part we sometimes skip over. He said, "Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your sins." This tells us that our prayer life, our faith, and our relationship with God are all tied up with how we treat others. It's like Jesus is saying, "You want God to hear your prayers and move mountains? Then you also need to have a heart that lets go of anger and hurts towards others."

Now, forgiveness isn't saying that what someone did was okay. It's not pretending something bad never happened. It's about releasing our grip on the hurt and letting God handle it. It's letting go of our desire for revenge and trusting God's justice. When we do this, it frees us, and it opens up our hearts to receive God's forgiveness for ourselves. It creates a clear path between us and God when we pray.

So, as you go about your day, think about these things: What 'mountain' are you facing that you need God's power to move? Are you praying with a trusting heart, believing God is at work? Is there anyone you need to forgive? What would it look like to release that hurt today? How might letting go of a grudge change your prayers?

My Final Thought

True faith isn't just about believing God can do something; it's about trusting Him with everything, even our hurts and our desire for justice. When we open our hearts to forgive, we open them wider to receive God's amazing grace and power.
