When I Feel Far From God
The Challenge: It can be so hard when God feels distant and silent.
Joseph's Thought
Maybe you're going through a tough time right now. Things are not going as you hoped. You've prayed, you've waited, but it feels like God isn't answering. Or perhaps you haven't been in your Bible much lately, and you sense a gap growing between you and God. That feeling of distance, that quiet space where you used to hear His voice, can be truly unsettling. It can make you wonder if something is wrong with you, or if God has somehow left you. I want to encourage you today: you are not alone in feeling this way. Many people, even strong followers of God, experience seasons where He feels far away. This doesn't mean God has moved. It means we need to look at what might be clouding our view or dampening our hearing. God is always faithful, and He is always near. Our feelings can be real, but they don't always tell us the full truth about God's presence. Let's find out what He wants us to do when He feels distant.
What Does God Say?
Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or tremble before them, for the Lord your God is the one who is going with you. He will not fail you or abandon you!””
This verse reminds us that God will never leave us or abandon us. Even when we feel alone, He is still there.
James 4:8
“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded.”
This tells us to draw near to God, and He will draw near to us. It shows that our actions can affect our closeness with Him.
Psalm 139:7-10
“Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee to escape your presence? If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be. If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn and settle down on the other side of the sea, even there your hand would guide me, your right hand would grab hold of me.”
This beautiful passage assures us that there is no place we can go where God is not present. He is with us always, no matter what.
Isaiah 41:10
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you! Don’t be frightened, for I am your God! I strengthen you— yes, I help you— yes, I uphold you with my victorious right hand!”
God tells us not to fear or be dismayed. He is our God, He will strengthen us, help us, and uphold us. He is actively involved in our lives.
Today's Challenge
Today, read Psalm 139 slowly, word by word, and write down two specific truths it tells you about God's nearness.
Take One Step
You don't have to solve everything today. Just focus on that one step: reading and reflecting on Psalm 139. Let its words sink into your heart and remind you of God's constant presence, even when your feelings tell you otherwise.
Think About It
What small, practical action can you take today to intentionally 'draw near' to God, even if it doesn't immediately change how you feel?
Today's Takeaway
Our feelings don't define God's presence; His Word does.
Let's Pray
Dear God, sometimes You feel so far away. My heart aches for Your presence, and I feel lost in the quiet. Help me to remember that my feelings are not always the full truth. Your Word tells me You are always near, that You will never leave me. Open my eyes and my heart to see and hear You today, even in the smallest ways. Give me the strength to reach out to You, knowing that as I draw near, You promise to draw near to me. Thank You for Your unfailing love and constant presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Whatever I'm facing, I can find God's wisdom for my next step.
