The welcome is quiet. After the opening song finishes, soft music plays underneath the rest of the Gathering, and it ends with the closing song.

What If He's Not Mad At Me
Church for people who don't really like church

Ever wonder if God is just... mad at you? Let's take a deep breath and explore a different idea together.
You can tap any of these while you listen — nothing stops the audio.
Hey there. It's good to have you here. This is Joseph. And this is The Gathering. You know, a space for people who might not always feel at home in traditional church settings. No pressure here. No judgment. Just a quiet moment to think about big things, honestly and gently. Maybe you've had a rough week. Maybe you're just curious. Whatever brought you here, you're welcome. Pull up a chair. Get comfortable. Let's just breathe together for a bit. This is for you, just as you are.
Not a Frowning Face
So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that brings death.
Romans 8:1-2
This isn't church-speak for 'you're off the hook if you join our club.' It's saying that if you're leaning into this idea of God, if you're trying to walk with Jesus, then the old weight of 'you're condemned, you're wrong' is lifted. You don't have to live under that cloud anymore. There's a new kind of power, a freeing power, that helps you step away from things that hurt you and lead to a kind of spiritual death.
Something to Think About
What’s one old idea you might be carrying about God that you could consider letting go of?
Saving privately keeps it in your account where only you can read it. Sending it shares it with Joseph only. Keeping it unsent stores nothing anywhere but this device.
Let's take a moment together. Just you and me. The message today about God not being mad at us, it's not just a nice idea. It's a profound truth that can change how we breathe, how we live, how we see ourselves. If you can, just close your eyes for a moment. Or just soften your gaze. Let the noise of the world quiet down.
Maybe you've always felt that sting of judgment, even from God. Maybe you've carried the weight of past mistakes, believing they've created an impassable wall between you and Him. Maybe you find yourself constantly striving, constantly trying to prove your worth, even to the divine. Or maybe, you've heard this idea before, but it just hasn't quite settled in your heart. You might still wonder if He's just waiting for you to mess up one more time. It's okay if those feelings are present. You're not alone in that. These are real, human feelings that many of us carry.
1 John 4:18: Perfect love casts out fear.
This moment, right now, is an invitation. It's an invitation to simply believe. To open your heart, just a little, to the possibility that God's love for you is bigger than your mistakes. Bigger than your past. Bigger than any judgment you've ever imagined. You don't have to clean yourself up first. You don't have to earn it. You don't have to perform. You just have to be willing to receive. If you've been carrying that burden of thinking God is angry, what would it look like to simply lay it down, even for a moment? To trust that He sees you, He knows you, and He loves you exactly as you are?
Dear God, I confess, it's hard to believe sometimes that you're not mad at me. My own heart can be so quick to condemn. But I want to believe. I want to step out from under the shadow of fear and into the light of your love. I give you all the ways I've tried to earn your favor, all the ways I've felt unworthy. I lay down the burden of believing you're disappointed. Help me to truly know, deep in my soul, that there is no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus. Thank you for loving me, just as I am, right now. Amen.
We're going to sit in quiet for a little while. Let that truth sink in. You are loved. You are not condemned. Stay here as long as you need.
Let's continue to sit in that peace. A quiet moment to just be in His presence, knowing He's not mad.
Take as long as you like. When you're ready, you can tell me where you are.
God, it's hard to shake these old ideas. Sometimes I feel like I'm not good enough. Help me to truly believe that you're not mad at me. Help me to feel your gentle presence, and to trust in your compassion. Amen.
It takes time to unlearn old stories we've been told, or stories we’ve told ourselves. The idea that God is perpetually angry is a heavy one. Today, just try to hold onto this thought: Maybe God isn’t mad at you. Maybe He’s actually quite fond of you. Maybe He just wants you to lean in a little closer, to feel the warmth of a love that doesn’t keep a scorecard. It's a journey, not a destination. Take a small step today.
Whenever you're ready
If this idea of a non-angry God feels like a breath of fresh air, that's a good sign. It's a gentle nudge towards knowing Him better. You can always reach out if you want to explore more about that.
