The welcome is quiet. After the opening song finishes, soft music plays underneath the rest of the Gathering, and it ends with the closing song.

The music begins after the opening song.

You Don't Have to Be a Church Person to Come to God

Joseph talks about finding God without needing to fit into a church box. It's about being seen and loved for who you are.

The audio for this Gathering is coming soon.

You can tap any of these while you listen — nothing stops the audio.

Hey there. It's good to have you here. I appreciate you taking some time out of your day to join us. Maybe you're curious. Maybe you're feeling a little lost. Maybe you just stumbled upon this. No matter how you got here, you are welcome. This is a place where you can just be yourself. No expectations, no pressure. Just a quiet moment to breathe and connect. We’re glad you’re here, truly. Let's just settle in for a bit.

Just As You Are

I’ve heard a lot of stories over the years. People tell me about their journey, where they’ve been, what they’ve seen. And one thing comes up again and again. It’s this feeling that you have to be a certain kind of person to be close to God. Or to even think about God. Like there’s a secret handshake, or a special uniform you need to wear. It’s almost like there’s a club. And if you haven't been to every meeting, or learned all the rules, you’re not really in. Maybe you’ve felt that. Maybe you’ve walked into a church building, or just thought about it, and immediately felt like an outsider. Too messy. Too broken. Too cynical. Not ‘churchy’ enough. I get it. I really do. Because sometimes, the way we talk about faith, it can feel like a performance. Like you need to have all the right answers, or a perfect past. And if you don't, well, then you’re probably better off staying away. But that’s not how it works. That’s not how God works. Think about it this way. Have you ever had a friend who just saw you? Not who you pretended to be, or who you thought you should be. But the real you. The one with all the quirks, the doubts, the not-so-great moments. And they still chose to be there. They still liked you. That’s the kind of seeing God does. I remember one time, I was working on an old car. It was a mess. Rust everywhere, engine sputtering, a real clunker. I was covered in grease, frustrated, ready to give up. And a friend walked by, took a look, and instead of judging the car, or me for trying to fix it, he just handed me a wrench. No questions. No lectures. Just help. He saw the potential, even in the grime. He saw me, even in my frustration. God is like that. He doesn’t need you to clean yourself up before you come to him. He doesn’t need you to put on your Sunday best, or memorize a prayer. He doesn't need you to 'act' a certain way. He just wants you. The real, honest, sometimes messy, sometimes confused, sometimes just plain tired you. He sees you, right where you are. Right now. And he extends a hand. Not because you've earned it, but because he’s like that. Because that’s who he is. It’s not about ticking boxes or fitting into a mold. It’s about being seen and known. It’s about being loved, not for what you do, or what you say, but simply for being you. That’s a freeing thought, isn’t it? To know that you don't have to pretend. You don't have to perform. You just have to show up, honestly. Because that's enough for him. More than enough.
Jesus answered them, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.'

Luke 5:31-32 (NIV)

Jesus is talking to some religious leaders here. They thought he should only spend time with 'good' people. But Jesus says, look, doctors go to people who are hurting, not people who are well. He’s saying he came for the people who know they’re messed up, who know they need help. Not for the ones who think they’ve got it all figured out and don't need him. It’s an invitation to everyone, especially those who feel broken.

Something to Think About

What parts of yourself do you usually try to hide, thinking they aren't 'good enough' for God?

Saving privately keeps it in your account where only you can read it. Sending it shares it with Joseph only. Keeping it unsent stores nothing anywhere but this device.

A moment for you

Let's just take a moment here. The music is soft, just a gentle background. No need to rush. No need to do anything. Just breathe. We’ve been talking about how you don't have to be a 'church person' to come to God, how he meets you right where you are, just as you are. I want to sit with that thought for a few quiet minutes.

Maybe you're sitting with a lot of heavy things right now. Maybe you've tried to be a 'good person' your whole life, and it just feels exhausting. Maybe you carry shame from things in your past, things you think God could never forgive. Maybe you feel completely alone, like no one truly understands. Maybe you've always felt like an outsider in any spiritual space. Maybe you've convinced yourself that you're too cynical, too damaged, too far gone. Whatever that 'too much' or 'not enough' feeling is, just acknowledge it. It’s okay. It’s safe here to just be honest with yourself about those feelings.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

This invitation from Jesus isn't about getting your act together. It’s about laying your act down. It's about recognizing that trying to clean yourself up first is like telling a doctor you'll get well before you come to their office. It just doesn't make sense. Jesus sees all the mess, all the weariness, all the burdens you carry. And he says, 'Come to me.' Just as you are. You don't have to believe all the right things, or even understand everything. You just have to be willing to show up, with all your questions, all your doubts, all your broken pieces. He’s here, waiting. Ready to meet you in that quiet, honest place. No judgment, just an open heart.

God, I hear your invitation. It’s hard to trust, it's hard to let go of the idea that I need to be perfect. But right now, in this quiet moment, I want to try. I bring my weariness. I bring my burdens. I bring all the things I usually hide. I don't know exactly what to do next, but I just want to step towards you. Thank you for seeing me, just as I am, and for loving me anyway. Help me to rest in that truth. Amen.

I’m just going to be quiet for a moment now. You can sit with these thoughts for as long as you need. There’s no rush. Just be still.

As we move from this quiet moment, let the music carry you. Feel free to just sit with it, or close your eyes. Let it be a comfort.

Take as long as you like. When you're ready, you can tell me where you are.

I Want to Know Jesus

God, it's hard sometimes to believe I can just come as I am. There's this voice that tells me I need to be better, or different. Help me to hear your voice instead. The one that says I'm seen, and I'm loved. Amen.

Remember that old car I was trying to fix? My friend didn't care about the grime or the sputtering engine. He saw me, and he offered help. That’s God for you. He doesn't need you to be fixed, polished, or cleaned up before you can come to him. He simply asks you to come. And he meets you right there, in the grease and the frustration. You don't have to be a 'church person.' You just have to be you. And that, my friend, is more than enough.
