“Never judge a book by its cover.”
Looking Beyond the Surface
We've all heard the saying, 'Never judge a book by its cover.' It sounds like good advice, doesn't it? But does this wisdom truly line up with God's heart for us?
What Does God Say?
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t be impressed by his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not view things the way people do. People look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.””
God reminds us that people look at the outside, but He looks at what is in our hearts.
“My brothers and sisters, do not show prejudice if you possess faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. For if someone comes into your assembly wearing a gold ring and fine clothing, and a poor person enters in filthy clothes, do you pay attention to the one who is finely dressed and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and to the poor person, “You stand over there,” or “Sit on the floor”? If so, have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil motives?”
This passage warns against showing favor to people based on how wealthy or important they seem to be.
“Do not judge according to external appearance, but judge with proper judgment.””
Jesus tells us not to judge by how things appear, but to make fair and right judgments.
So, Is It True?
Biblically supported
The familiar saying, 'Never judge a book by its cover,' truly echoes God's desire for us. He wants us to look beyond what we see with our eyes and to seek to understand what is truly inside a person's heart. This helps us to love others as He loves them.
The Takeaway
God sees the heart; we should try to see it too.
We've heard what people say. But what does God say?
