When You Really Want Something, Does It Always Happen?

We've all heard that if you want something bad enough, you'll find a way to make it happen. Is that always true in life?

It's easy to believe that saying, 'Where there’s a will, there’s a way,' because it sounds so powerful. It makes us feel like we can do anything if we just try hard enough. And it's true that having a strong desire, a 'will,' can help us work hard and overcome many challenges. It pushes us to keep going when things get tough. God certainly gives us the ability to be determined and to work towards good things. But sometimes, even with all the will in the world, things don't work out exactly as we planned or hoped. There are things beyond our control, and sometimes, what we want might not be the best path for us, even if we don't realize it at the moment. Our human will is good, but it's not perfect. It's important to remember that God's plan is bigger and better than anything we could come up with on our own. His ways are not always our ways, and sometimes His 'way' involves a different path than we expected. So, while our will is important, it's not the only factor.

What Does God Say?

Proverbs 16:9

“A person plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps.”

This verse reminds us that even when we make our own plans, it's the Lord who truly guides our steps and decides where we end up.

James 4:13-15

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. You ought to say instead, “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.””

This passage tells us that we should always remember to say, 'If the Lord wills,' when we talk about our future plans, because we don't know what tomorrow holds.

Philippians 2:13

“for the one bringing forth in you both the desire and the effort—for the sake of his good pleasure—is God.”

This teaches us that God actually works in us to help us both want and do what pleases Him, so our will is guided by His.

So, Is It True?

Partially true

While having a strong will and working hard is important, this saying misses the crucial truth that God's will and plan are always above our own. Our human will is powerful, but God's way is perfect.

The Takeaway

Our efforts are important, but God's plan is the ultimate way.

We've heard what people say. But what does God say?
