Colossians 3

Living Like We Belong to Jesus

About Colossians 3

Because we belong to the risen Jesus, our lives can take a new direction. Colossians 3 shows how that new life shapes our thoughts, words, relationships, homes, and daily work.

Setting the Scene
Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Colossae while he was in prison. Teachings that mixed human rules with spiritual claims were drawing attention away from Christ. After showing that Jesus is fully able to save and lead His people, Paul now explains how life joined to Christ changes everyday living.

Walking Through Colossians 3

Let Jesus Set Your Direction (Colossians 3:1-4)

1 Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, 3 for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ (who is your life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him.Colossians 3:1-4 · NET Bible

Paul begins with what God has already done for believers. Through faith, they share in Christ’s risen life. Their old life no longer defines them, and their future is held safely with Jesus in God. Christ now rules beside the Father, and when He appears, His people will share in His glory. Setting our minds on heavenly things does not mean ignoring life here. It means letting Jesus shape what matters to us here. I want you to notice the order: Paul gives us a sure foundation before he gives us commands. We do not change ourselves to earn a place with Christ. We learn to live differently because we already belong to Him. Our full future is not yet visible, but it is secure in our living Savior.

Leave the Old Ways Behind (Colossians 3:5-9)

5 So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. 7 You also lived your lives in this way at one time, when you used to live among them. 8 But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practicesColossians 3:5-9 · NET Bible

Belonging to Jesus calls for a firm break with sin. Paul names sexual sin, impure desires, and greed. He treats greed as worshiping a false god because it gives something created the place that belongs to God. These sins bring God’s judgment; they are not harmless habits. Yet Paul reminds the readers that such things belonged to their former way of life. He then turns to anger, rage, a desire to hurt others, insults, dirty speech, and lying. We must not judge one kind of sin while making room for another. I want us to hear both the seriousness and the hope here. Putting sin to death means refusing to feed it or make excuses for it. God’s grace does not make sin safe. It gives us a new reason to leave it behind.

Put On the Family Likeness (Colossians 3:10-14)

10 and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it. 11 Here there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and in all. 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if someone happens to have a complaint against anyone else. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also forgive others. 14 And to all these virtues add love, which is the perfect bond.Colossians 3:10-14 · NET Bible

The new life is more than a list of things to stop. God is renewing His people so they know Him and reflect His character. Paul names divisions that once separated people: Jewish and Greek backgrounds, religious marks, cultures, and slave or free status. Even groups others looked down on have a place in Christ. None of these labels makes a believer more valuable than another. Then Paul describes the clothing of this new life: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. His readers are already chosen, set apart for God, and loved. Their actions should grow from that love. We bear with one another and forgive because the Lord has forgiven us. Forgiveness does not call evil good. It follows Christ’s mercy rather than seeking revenge. Above everything, love holds these qualities together.

Make Room for Christ Together (Colossians 3:15-17)

15 Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.Colossians 3:15-17 · NET Bible

Paul now describes the shared life of the church. Christ’s peace should guide people who have been called into one body. This is more than a private feeling about a decision. It is the peace Jesus brings among His people. His message should fill the church as believers teach, correct, and encourage one another with wisdom. Singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs helps carry that truth into our hearts. Thankfulness appears throughout these verses because grace gives us good reason to praise God. I love how Paul brings everything together: our words and actions should honor Jesus as Lord. Worship is not limited to a gathering or a song. A conversation, a choice, and a task can all be offered with thanks to the Father through Christ.

Let Love Shape the Home (Colossians 3:18-21)

18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing in the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they will not become disheartened.Colossians 3:18-21 · NET Bible

The new life must reach into the home. Paul calls wives to willing submission to their husbands in a way that fits their loyalty to the Lord. He commands husbands to love their wives and never treat them harshly. Children are to obey their parents, while fathers must not keep provoking their children and crushing their spirits. These instructions speak into households where husbands and fathers often held great power. Paul places that power under the rule of Jesus. No one receives permission to be cruel or controlling. Submission and obedience must not be twisted into demands to commit sin or endure abuse in silence. I want to encourage every reader to notice the care these commands require. A Christ-shaped home needs faithful love, patient guidance, and respect for each person’s worth.

Serve the Lord in Daily Work (Colossians 3:22-25)

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in every respect, not only when they are watching—like those who are strictly people-pleasers—but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, 24 because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward. Serve the Lord Christ. 25 For the one who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there are no exceptions.Colossians 3:22-25 · NET Bible

Paul addresses enslaved believers living within the Roman system of slavery. This was not simply the same as having a modern job. His instruction tells them how to serve Christ within their hard situation; it does not declare slavery good. They are to work sincerely, not only when watched or to win human approval. Their deepest loyalty belongs to the Lord. Paul gives them a striking promise: they will receive an inheritance from Him. People denied standing or property by society are not forgotten by God. Christ is their true Master, and He judges wrongdoing without playing favorites. Those with ordinary jobs can also learn from this call to honest work, though the situations differ. Our effort matters to Jesus, and human rank never places anyone above His justice.

Key Words
  • Renewal — God’s ongoing work of making His people more like Him.
  • Love — Seeking another person’s good in ways that reflect Christ’s care.
How It Fits the Whole Bible
This chapter connects Christ’s death and resurrection with the daily lives of His people. God is forming a renewed family that reflects His character across old social and cultural divisions. Jesus is both the source of this new life and the Lord who guides it until He returns.
Living It Out
Choose one old habit named in this chapter that you need to turn from, and one Christlike quality you need to practice. Ask for God’s help, then take a clear step today in your speech, your home, or your work. Do this from the assurance that you are loved, not from a need to earn God’s love.
Something to Think About

Where would your daily life look different this week if you more fully remembered that you belong to Jesus?

A Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for giving us new life in Christ. Help us turn from sin and grow in kindness, patience, forgiveness, and love. Let our homes, words, and work show that Jesus is our Lord. Keep our hearts thankful as You renew us.
