John 14

A Sure Hope for Troubled Hearts

About John 14

Jesus prepares His disciples for His coming death and His return to the Father. He gives them lasting hope: they belong with Him, the Holy Spirit will help them, and His peace will hold them through what lies ahead.

Setting the Scene
The Gospel of John is traditionally understood to have been written by the apostle John, who followed Jesus closely. This chapter takes place during Jesus’ final evening with His disciples before His arrest. Judas has left to betray Him, and Jesus has told Peter that he will deny Him. Into that troubled setting, Jesus speaks words of comfort and promise.

Walking Through John 14

There Is Room with the Father (John 14:1-7)

1 “Do not let your hearts be distressed. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 There are many dwelling places in my Father’s house. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going away to make ready a place for you. 3 And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too. 4 And you know the way where I am going.” 5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you have known me, you will know my Father too. And from now on you do know him and have seen him.”John 14:1-7 · NET Bible

Jesus knows His disciples are afraid. He calls them to trust Him as they trust God. His leaving does not mean He is giving up on them. He is going to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house, and He promises to come again and bring them to Himself. The greatest comfort here is not the size or beauty of a heavenly home. It is being with Jesus.

Thomas admits that he does not understand where Jesus is going. Jesus answers by making Himself the center of their hope. He is the only way to the Father, the One who makes God known, and the source of life. This is not a path they must discover by being clever or good enough. They must trust Him. I find real comfort here: our hope rests on who Jesus is, not on how much we understand.

The Son Makes the Father Known (John 14:8-14)

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content.” 9 Jesus replied, “Have I been with you for so long and yet you have not known me, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father! How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative, but the Father residing in me performs his miraculous deeds. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, but if you do not believe me, believe because of the miraculous deeds themselves. 12 I tell you the solemn truth, the person who believes in me will perform the miraculous deeds that I am doing, and will perform greater deeds than these because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.John 14:8-14 · NET Bible

Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father. Jesus explains that His words and works have already shown them what the Father is like. The Father and Son are distinct, yet they are one in their divine life and work. Jesus is not simply a teacher with good ideas about God. He makes the Father known in a way no one else can.

Jesus also promises that those who believe in Him will continue His work. Their greater works do not mean they will become greater than Jesus. After His return to the Father, His followers will carry the good news far beyond the places He visited during His earthly ministry.

Prayer belongs to this work. Asking in Jesus’ name means asking in keeping with who He is and what He desires. It is not a special phrase that guarantees every wish. Its goal is the Father’s honor through the Son.

Help That Will Not Leave (John 14:15-21)

15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it does not see him or know him. But you know him because he resides with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you. 19 In a little while the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too. 20 You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you. 21 The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.”John 14:15-21 · NET Bible

Jesus joins love and obedience. Love for Him takes shape in listening to Him and following His commands. Obedience does not buy His love. It shows that our love for Him is real.

The disciples will not have to live this life alone. Jesus will ask the Father to give them another Helper, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will stay with them and live in them. The world cannot receive Him while it refuses to know Him. But these disciples already know His presence through Jesus’ work among them.

Jesus promises not to leave them as children without a parent. His death will not be the end: they will see Him again, and His risen life will secure theirs. Through the Spirit, they will know their close bond with Jesus and the Father. Following Jesus means more than learning rules. It means sharing life with the living Lord.

God Makes His Home with His People (John 14:22-26)

22 “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him. 24 The person who does not love me does not obey my words. And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father’s who sent me. 25 “I have spoken these things while staying with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and will cause you to remember everything I said to you.John 14:22-26 · NET Bible

Another disciple named Judas—not Judas Iscariot—asks why Jesus will make Himself known to the disciples rather than to the world. He seems to expect a public display that everyone can see. Jesus turns his attention to love, obedience, and the presence of God.

The Father and Son will make their home with those who love Jesus and keep His word. This is a promise of a close, lasting relationship, not merely a brief visit. Those who reject Jesus’ words are also rejecting the Father who sent Him. Again, obedience is the fruit of love, not a payment for God’s presence.

Jesus then explains the Spirit’s teaching work. The Father will send Him in Jesus’ name to teach the disciples and remind them of Jesus’ words. This promise especially prepares these first witnesses to pass on Jesus’ teaching faithfully. The Spirit will not draw them away from Jesus, but help them understand Him.

Peace on the Road to the Cross (John 14:27-31)

27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father because the Father is greater than I am. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up, let us go from here.John 14:27-31 · NET Bible

Jesus gives His disciples peace even though danger is near. His peace is not like the world’s peace, which often depends on safe conditions. It rests on His care and on His victory over the evil they are about to face.

Jesus says they would rejoice at His return to the Father if they understood what it meant for Him. His statement that the Father is greater describes His humble place as the sent Son during His earthly mission. It does not cancel what John has already shown about His divine nature. Jesus tells them what is coming so that, when it happens, their faith will grow.

The ruler of this world, Satan, is approaching through the events of Jesus’ arrest and death. Yet he has no rightful claim over the sinless Son. Jesus goes to the cross in loving obedience to the Father, not because evil has gained the final victory.
