John 17
Held in the Father's Love
Before His arrest, Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and everyone who will believe in Him through their message. His prayer shows His deep love for His people and His desire that they know the Father, live in truth, and share His love.
Walking Through John 17
The Son Makes the Father Known (John 17:1-5)
1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he looked upward to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you— 2 just as you have given him authority over all humanity, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life—that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. 4 I glorified you on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me at your side with the glory I had with you before the world was created.John 17:1-5 · NET Bible
Jesus begins by asking the Father to show His glory through Him, so that He may bring glory to the Father. Glory means God's greatness and goodness made known. Here, that glory will be shown through Jesus' death, rising again, and return to the Father. The cross will not mean His mission has failed. It will complete the saving work He came to do. Jesus describes eternal life as knowing the Father and knowing Jesus, whom the Father sent. This is more than knowing facts or living forever. It is life in a true relationship with God. Jesus also speaks of the glory He shared with the Father before the world began. He did not begin to exist at His birth. I find deep comfort here: our Savior came from the Father's presence to bring us into life with Him.
The People the Father Gave Him (John 17:6-10)
6 “I have revealed your name to the men you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they understand that everything you have given me comes from you, 8 because I have given them the words you have given me. They accepted them and really understand that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying on behalf of them. I am not praying on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those you have given me because they belong to you. 10 Everything I have belongs to you, and everything you have belongs to me, and I have been glorified by them.John 17:6-10 · NET Bible
Jesus now prays for the disciples who have received His message. He has made the Father known to them through His words and actions. They have come to believe that Jesus was sent by God and that His teaching comes from the Father. Their understanding is still growing, and they will soon stumble. Yet Jesus speaks of them as people who belong to God. Their place with Him rests on the Father's gift, not on perfect understanding or flawless courage. In this part of the prayer, Jesus focuses on these disciples rather than the world at large. That does not mean He has stopped loving the world. These are the men who will carry His message into it. Jesus says that glory has come to Him through them. God can show His goodness through people who are still learning to trust Him.
Kept Safe and Sent Out (John 17:11-19)
11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. 12 When I was with them I kept them safe and watched over them in your name that you have given me. Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and I am saying these things in the world, so they may experience my joy completed in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but that you keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world just as I do not belong to the world. 17 Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth. 18 Just as you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. 19 And I set myself apart on their behalf, so that they too may be truly set apart.John 17:11-19 · NET Bible
Jesus is returning to the Father, but His disciples will remain in a world that rejects Him. He asks the Father to keep them by His name—that is, by His power and faithful care—so they may be one. Jesus has guarded them; Judas's betrayal fulfills Scripture rather than overturning God's plan. Jesus also wants His joy to fill them. He does not ask that they escape the world, but that they be protected from the evil one, Satan. Their lives now belong to God, though they still live among people who need Him. Jesus asks the Father to sanctify them, meaning to set them apart for His work through the truth of His word. Jesus sets Himself apart for His saving work, including the cross, so they can truly belong to God's service. I notice that His prayer joins protection with purpose: He keeps His people as He sends them.
A Unity the World Can See (John 17:20-23)
20 “I am not praying only on their behalf, but also on behalf of those who believe in me through their testimony, 21 that they will all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray that they will be in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me. 22 The glory you gave to me I have given to them, that they may be one just as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—that they may be completely one, so that the world will know that you sent me, and you have loved them just as you have loved me.John 17:20-23 · NET Bible
The prayer reaches beyond the people in the room. Jesus prays for those who will believe through the apostles' message. That includes believers today. He asks that His people be one, with the close love of the Father and Son as the pattern and source of their unity. This does not mean believers become God or lose their differences. It means they share life in Him and belong to one another. The glory Jesus gives them draws them into that shared life, where God's goodness can be seen. Their unity has a purpose beyond their own comfort: it helps the world recognize that the Father sent Jesus. Division hides something that love should make plain. Don't rush past the love named here. Jesus says the Father loves His people with the love He has for His Son. Our unity grows from that gift.
With Jesus in His Glory (John 17:24-26)
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they can see my glory that you gave me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, even if the world does not know you, I know you, and these men know that you sent me. 26 I made known your name to them, and I will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them, and I may be in them.”John 17:24-26 · NET Bible
Jesus ends by expressing His desire that His people be with Him and see His glory. His hope for them reaches beyond survival in a hard world. He wants them to share His presence. The Father's love for the Son reaches back before the world began, and Jesus welcomes His people into the joy of knowing that love. He calls the Father righteous, meaning that the Father is right and good in all His ways. The world has not known Him, but Jesus knows Him, and the disciples have recognized that the Father sent Him. Jesus has made the Father known and will continue to do so. His purpose is that the Father's love will live in His people and that He Himself will be in them. The prayer closes with lasting love and closeness, not distance.
- Glory — God's greatness and goodness made known, especially through Jesus.
- Sanctify — To set people apart for God and His work.
How does knowing that Jesus prayed for future believers change the way you see your place in His care?
