Revelation 10
A Sweet Word and a Hard Calling
A mighty angel announces that God's plan is moving toward its finish. John receives a small scroll that tastes sweet but turns his stomach bitter, showing that receiving God's message brings both joy and a serious duty to speak it.
Walking Through Revelation 10
A Mighty Messenger and a Hidden Message (Revelation 10:1-4)
1 Then I saw another powerful angel descending from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like pillars of fire. 2 He held in his hand a little scroll that was open, and he put his right foot on the sea and his left on the land. 3 Then he shouted in a loud voice like a lion roaring, and when he shouted, the seven thunders sounded their voices. 4 When the seven thunders spoke, I was preparing to write, but just then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders spoke and do not write it down.”Revelation 10:1-4 · NET Bible
John sees another mighty angel coming down from heaven. A cloud surrounds him, a rainbow is over his head, his face shines like the sun, and his legs look like pillars of fire. These details show the glory and power of the God who sent him. The angel holds a small, open scroll and places one foot on the sea and the other on the land. His stance points to the worldwide reach of the message he carries.
His shout sounds like a lion, and seven thunders answer. John is ready to write what they said, but a voice from heaven tells him to keep it hidden.
I want us to notice that limit. John truly hears something, yet God does not allow him to share it. Revelation reveals God's truth, but it does not answer every question. We should not build guesses around what God has kept hidden. Faith grows as we trust what God has made known and leave the rest with Him.
God Will Bring His Plan to Completion (Revelation 10:5-7)
5 Then the angel I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven 6 and swore by the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, and the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, “There will be no more delay! 7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to blow his trumpet, the mystery of God is completed, just as he has proclaimed to his servants the prophets.”Revelation 10:5-7 · NET Bible
The angel raises his right hand toward heaven and makes a solemn promise in the name of the eternal Creator. Heaven, earth, sea, and everything in them belong to God. The angel's message rests on God's authority, not his own strength.
He announces that there will be no more delay. This does not mean that time itself will stop. It means that God's announced purpose will no longer be held back. When the seventh angel sounds his trumpet, God's mystery will reach its finish, just as He announced to His servants the prophets. Here, mystery means God's plan, which people could not discover on their own but which He has made known.
For believers under pressure, this is strong comfort. Evil will not keep ruling without an end. God has not forgotten His promises or lost control of His world. I want to encourage you: waiting does not mean God is absent. His wisdom governs the timing, and His faithfulness guarantees that His purpose will stand.
Taking God's Word Deep Within (Revelation 10:8-10)
8 Then the voice I had heard from heaven began to speak to me again, “Go and take the open scroll in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” 9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take the scroll and eat it. It will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.” 10 So I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it, and it did taste as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter.Revelation 10:8-10 · NET Bible
The voice from heaven speaks again and tells John to take the open scroll from the angel. When John asks for it, the angel tells him to eat it. He also warns John that it will taste sweet but make his stomach bitter. John obeys, and both parts happen just as the angel said.
This action recalls Ezekiel's call to receive God's message before speaking it to others (Ezekiel 2:8-3:3). John must do more than look at the scroll. Eating it pictures taking God's message deeply into himself. The chapter does not give us the scroll's full wording, so we should be careful about claiming more than the text says.
God's word is sweet because it comes from Him and declares His faithful purpose. Yet its warnings of judgment and suffering are painful to receive. I do not want us to choose only the parts that feel easy. Spiritual growth means welcoming God's comfort and letting His harder words correct us, soften us, and shape our lives.
A Message That Must Still Be Spoken (Revelation 10:11)
11 Then they told me: “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.”Revelation 10:11 · NET Bible
John is told that he must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings. To prophesy means to speak the message God gives. The bitter taste does not cancel his calling. Receiving the scroll prepares him for the visions and messages that follow.
Notice how wide this task reaches. God's concern is not limited to one town or one group. Ordinary people and powerful rulers alike live under His rule. The churches receiving this book may have seemed small beside the power of Rome, but their Lord's message reaches far beyond any empire.
John's role is unique, and this verse does not make every reader a prophet like him. Still, it teaches us something important about faithfulness. We receive God's word so that we can live by it and share its truth with care. I want to encourage you to speak about Jesus with both courage and kindness. Hard truth should never become an excuse for a hard heart.
- Mystery — God's purpose, made known by Him and brought to completion in His time.
- Scroll — The small written message John receives and eats as a picture of taking God's word into his life.
What part of God's word do you need to receive more deeply, even if it is hard to accept?
Father, thank You for making Your truth known and for keeping every promise. Help us trust You with what remains hidden. Give us willing hearts to receive Your word and loving courage to speak about Jesus. Amen.
