Revelation 5
The Lamb Who Holds Our Future
Revelation 5 shows us that Jesus alone is worthy to open God's scroll and carry out His plan. Heaven's tears turn into praise as Jesus, pictured as a Lamb who was killed yet lives, receives worship from all creation.
Walking Through Revelation 5
A Scroll No One Can Open (Revelation 5:1-4)
1 Then I saw in the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne a scroll written on the front and back and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a powerful angel proclaiming in a loud voice: “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or look into it. 4 So I began weeping bitterly because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.Revelation 5:1-4 · NET Bible
John sees a scroll in the right hand of the One seated on the throne. It has writing on both sides and is closed with seven seals. Ancient seals kept a document closed until someone with the proper right could open it. Here, the scroll holds God's plan for judgment and for setting His creation right. A mighty angel asks who is worthy to open it. No one anywhere in creation can do so, and John begins to weep deeply. These tears show how much is at stake. If no one can open the scroll, how will God's purposes move forward? I don't want us to miss where the scroll rests: in God's hand. The world's future is not outside His care. Yet no human ruler, angel, or other created being has what it takes to bring that future about. We need someone worthy.
The Lion Appears as a Lamb (Revelation 5:5-7)
5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has conquered; thus he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” 6 Then I saw standing in the middle of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the middle of the elders, a Lamb that appeared to have been killed. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 Then he came and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne,Revelation 5:5-7 · NET Bible
An elder tells John to stop weeping because the promised King from Judah and David's family has won the victory. These titles reach back to Genesis 49:9-10 and Isaiah 11:1-10. John hears about a Lion, but when he looks, he sees a Lamb. The Lamb bears the marks of having been killed, yet He stands alive. This is Jesus, who conquered through His death and resurrection. His seven horns picture complete power. His seven eyes, identified with God's seven spirits sent throughout the earth, point to the fullness of God's Spirit and His work everywhere. These are picture words, not a lesson about Jesus' physical appearance. The Lamb approaches and takes the scroll from God's right hand. I find such hope here: the One trusted with the world's future is the same One who gave His life to save us. His power and His love belong together.
A New Song for a Redeemed People (Revelation 5:8-10)
8 and when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders threw themselves to the ground before the Lamb. Each of them had a harp and golden bowls full of incense (which are the prayers of the saints). 9 They were singing a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals because you were killed, and at the cost of your own blood you have purchased for God persons from every tribe, language, people, and nation. 10 You have appointed them as a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”Revelation 5:8-10 · NET Bible
When the Lamb takes the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fall before Him. They hold harps and golden bowls of incense. John explains that the incense represents the prayers of God's people. Saints means those who belong to God, not just a few especially honored believers. Your prayers are not treated as worthless in heaven. A new song then explains why Jesus is worthy: He was killed, and through His blood He purchased people for God from every tribe, language, people, and nation. His death brings people out of slavery to sin and into belonging to God. He makes them a kingdom and priests, people who serve God and have access to Him. They will share in His reign on earth. Notice how wide His saving love reaches. No nation owns Jesus, and no people group is beyond the reach of His grace.
Heaven Declares His Worth (Revelation 5:11-12)
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels in a circle around the throne, as well as the living creatures and the elders. Their number was ten thousand times ten thousand—thousands times thousands— 12 all of whom were singing in a loud voice: “Worthy is the lamb who was killed to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and praise!”Revelation 5:11-12 · NET Bible
The circle of praise grows. John sees and hears angels surrounding the throne, the living creatures, and the elders. Their number is far beyond counting. Together they declare that the Lamb who was killed deserves power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and praise. These seven expressions give a full picture of His worth. The angels are not making Jesus worthy by praising Him. They are recognizing the worth He already has. Again, heaven draws attention to His death. What looked like defeat on earth is the very reason heaven celebrates His victory. For churches under pressure, this vision gave a needed change of view. Earthly rulers might demand honor and seem impossible to resist, but they were not the highest power. I want to encourage you: faithfulness to Jesus is never misplaced. He deserves our trust even when the voices around us praise something else.
All Creation Joins the Praise (Revelation 5:13-14)
13 Then I heard every creature—in heaven, on earth, under the earth, in the sea, and all that is in them—singing: “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be praise, honor, glory, and ruling power forever and ever!” 14 And the four living creatures were saying “Amen,” and the elders threw themselves to the ground and worshiped.Revelation 5:13-14 · NET Bible
The praise now reaches beyond the angels. John hears every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea honoring both the One on the throne and the Lamb. The vision reaches toward the day when God's rule is openly acknowledged throughout creation. The Father and the Lamb receive the same lasting honor, glory, and power. This shared worship shows that Jesus is not merely another servant standing near God. He shares in the honor that belongs to God. The four living creatures answer with agreement, and the elders fall down in worship. The chapter began with weeping because no one could open the scroll. It ends with worship because the worthy One has come. Before the seals are opened and the hard scenes ahead unfold, we are shown who holds authority. We can face what follows knowing that the crucified and risen Jesus rules.
- Worthy — deserving honor and having the right to carry out God's plan.
- Lamb — a picture of Jesus, who gave His life for sinners and now lives in victory.
How would remembering that the slain and risen Lamb holds the future change the way you face your greatest worry today?
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to save people from every nation. Help us trust the Lamb who gave His life and rose again. Keep us faithful in prayer, generous in love, and ready to worship You.
