When I Ask 'Why, God?'
The Challenge: Making sense of suffering and difficulty when I believe in a good God.
Joseph's Thought
It happens to all of us, doesn't it? That moment when something hard, something unfair, something truly painful, comes into our lives. We look at the situation, and then we look up, and our hearts cry out, 'Why, God? Why did You allow this to happen?' It's a natural reaction, a human reaction, to wonder why a loving and powerful God would let bad things touch us or those we care about. We might feel confused, maybe even a little angry or disappointed. And in those moments, it's easy to feel lost or like our faith is shaking.
But here's an important truth I want you to hold onto: Asking 'why' is not a sign of weak faith. It's often a sign of deep love and deep trust, because you are taking your hurt directly to the One you believe can do something about it. God isn't surprised by our questions. He isn't upset by our honest struggles. In fact, many people in the Bible, including Jesus Himself, cried out 'why?'
What matters is not that we ask 'why,' but what we do with that question. Do we let it drive us away from God, or do we let it draw us closer, seeking His wisdom and comfort even when we don't understand? Today, we're going to lean into that space of not knowing and see what God's Word tells us about His character, His presence, and His purposes, even when life makes no sense to us.
What Does God Say?
Romans 8:28
“And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose,”
This verse reminds us that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. It doesn't say all things are good, but that God uses them for good, even if we can't see how right now.
Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he delivers those who are discouraged.”
This passage shows us that God is close to those who are hurting and sad. He doesn't leave us alone in our pain; He is near to comfort and support us.
Isaiah 55:8-9
““Indeed, my plans are not like your plans, and my deeds are not like your deeds,” says the Lord, “for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so my deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans.”
These verses explain that God's thoughts and ways are much higher than ours. We can't always understand His full plan, but we can trust that His ways are perfect and good, even when they seem strange to us.
John 16:33
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, but take courage—I have conquered the world.””
Jesus tells us plainly that we will face trouble in this world. But He also gives us hope by saying that He has overcome the world, so we can have peace even in our difficulties.
Today's Challenge
Write down one specific 'why' question that is heavy on your heart today, then ask God to show you His presence within that situation.
Take One Step
You don't have to solve the mystery of 'why' today. Your next right step is simply to bring your honest question to God, knowing He hears you. Tell Him exactly how you feel about what happened. He can handle your raw emotions.
Think About It
How might focusing on God's character (His goodness, love, and power) change the way I approach my 'why' questions?
Today's Takeaway
When I don't understand God's plan, I can always trust His heart.
Let's Pray
Dear Father, today my heart is heavy with questions. I don't understand why certain things happen, and sometimes it's really hard to make sense of it all. I confess my feelings of confusion, sadness, and even disappointment to You. Help me to remember that You are good, even when life feels bad. Remind me that You are always near, especially when I am hurting. Give me the faith to trust Your wisdom, even when I can't see the full picture. Help me to find my peace and comfort in Your loving presence, knowing that You are working all things for good. Strengthen me to keep leaning on You, Lord, and to find my hope in You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Whatever I'm facing, I can find God's wisdom for my next step.
