When I'm Not Being a Good Christian Example for My Kids

The Challenge: How do I live out my faith consistently for my children to see?

Joseph's Thought

It's easy to feel like we're failing, isn't it? Especially when it comes to being a good example for our children. We want them to see Jesus in us, to learn about God's love and truth through our lives. But then, a tough day hits. We lose our patience. We say something we shouldn't. We get caught up in our own worries or frustrations, and suddenly, we realize we haven't been the picture of grace or calm we hoped to be. Maybe you're feeling that weight right now. You look at your kids, and you know they're watching. They're learning. And sometimes, what they're seeing isn't what you preach. This isn't about perfection; none of us are perfect. It's about honesty and growth. It's about knowing that God doesn't expect us to be flawless, but He does call us to keep leaning into Him, even when we stumble. He gives us His strength and His wisdom for these very moments. Your kids don't need a perfect parent; they need a parent who is real, who admits mistakes, and who keeps pointing to God. That's a powerful example too.

What Does God Say?

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

“These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.”

God tells us to keep His words in our hearts and to teach them to our children always, whether we are home or out, waking or sleeping. This means our faith should be a natural part of our daily lives, not just something we do on Sundays.

Ephesians 4:29

“You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need, that it would give grace to those who hear.”

This verse reminds us to speak only words that build others up and give grace. When we think about how we talk to and about our kids, and how we talk in front of them, this verse helps us choose our words carefully and kindly.

Galatians 6:9

“So we must not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up.”

This verse encourages us not to give up doing good. Parenting can be hard and tiring, and we might feel like quitting. But God tells us that if we don't stop, we will see good results at the right time.

1 John 1:9

“But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness.”

When we know we've messed up, this verse is a great comfort. It tells us that if we tell God our sins, He is faithful to forgive us and make us clean again. This also teaches us how to model asking for forgiveness to our children.

Today's Challenge

Today, pick one specific area where you want to be a better example (like patience, kindness, or honest words) and consciously pray about it and practice it when you interact with your children.

Take One Step

You don't have to solve everything today. Just focus on taking your next right step. What's one small change you can make today to show your kids more of God's love and truth? Choose that one thing and do it.

Think About It

How can my response to my own mistakes teach my children about God's grace and forgiveness?

Today's Takeaway

Your children need a real parent who points to a real God, not a perfect parent.

Let's Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You feeling the weight of wanting to be a good example for my children. Sometimes I fall short. Sometimes I get it wrong. Forgive me, Lord, for the times my actions or words haven't shown Your love and grace. Help me to remember that You are patient and kind with me, and empower me to show that same patience and kindness to my kids. Guide my words and my actions today. Help me to be honest when I make mistakes and to always point them back to You, the source of all good things. Thank You for Your endless grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Whatever I'm facing, I can find God's wisdom for my next step.
