The Gift That Outlives You

By Joseph Cutler ·

I was sorting through a box of old birthday cards last week when it hit me: almost every gift I have ever received is gone. The toys broke. The clothes wore out. The gadgets were replaced. Even the cards themselves were on their way to a recycling bin.

And then I thought about the one gift that does not work like that.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

Eternal life is not a longer version of this life. It is a different kind of life — God’s own life — given freely to anyone who will receive Jesus. It cannot be earned, returned, or out-grown. It does not depreciate. It does not get lost in a move.

If you have already received it, take a breath today and remember: the best thing about you is not what you accomplish before you die. It is Who lives in you forever.

And if you have never opened that gift, it is still sitting there with your name on it. All you have to do is say yes.
