1 John 1
Real Life in the Light
John opens his letter by showing us that Jesus is real, eternal, and the source of life with God. He calls us to share life with the Father and His Son, walk in God's light, and trust God's forgiveness when we admit our sin.
Walking Through 1 John 1
The Life They Saw and Heard (1 John 1:1-2)
1 This is what we proclaim to you: what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and our hands have touched (concerning the word of life— 2 and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us).1 John 1:1-2 · NET Bible
John begins with a strong claim: the message about Jesus rests on real events. John and the other witnesses heard Him, saw Him, and touched Him. Jesus was not a ghost or an idea someone dreamed up. He truly came among us as a man. Yet His life did not begin when people first saw Him. He is the eternal life who was with the Father and was made known to them.
This matters because our faith rests on who Jesus really is, not on a feeling we must create. The Son who was with the Father entered our world so that we could know God and receive life from Him. I want us to notice God's loving purpose here. He did not leave us to guess our way toward Him. He made Himself known through His Son, and these witnesses passed that good news along.
An Invitation to Shared Life (1 John 1:3-4)
3 What we have seen and heard we announce to you too, so that you may have fellowship with us (and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ). 4 Thus we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.1 John 1:3-4 · NET Bible
The witnesses did not keep what they knew about Jesus to themselves. They announced it so that others could share in their fellowship. Fellowship means sharing life together. Here it is much more than enjoying friendly company. It is belonging together through a shared relationship with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
Notice the order. John tells the truth about Jesus, and that truth draws people into life with God and His people. We do not build this fellowship by setting Jesus aside so that everyone can agree. He is the One who brings us together. John also connects this shared life with full joy. That does not mean believers never feel sorrow. It means knowing God gives us a deep reason for joy, even when life is hard. We were not meant to hold this faith alone. God's grace welcomes us into His family.
God's Light and Our Daily Walk (1 John 1:5-6)
5 Now this is the gospel message we have heard from him and announce to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him and yet keep on walking in the darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth.1 John 1:5-6 · NET Bible
John now states the message he received from Jesus: God is light, with no darkness in Him. Light helps us understand God's complete goodness, purity, and truth. There is nothing evil or false in His character. He does not hide a cruel side behind His love, and He never needs to make peace with sin.
Because this is who God is, claiming to know Him while choosing a life of darkness is a lie. Walking describes the way we live, not merely the words we say. John is challenging the idea that someone can share life with God while treating sin as harmless. I want to be careful here: he is not saying that a believer never fails. The next verses make that clear. He is saying that our claim to know God cannot be separated from our response to His truth. His light calls us out of hiding.
Clean Through the Blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7-8)
7 But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we do not bear the guilt of sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.1 John 1:7-8 · NET Bible
Walking in the light means living openly before God and following His truth. It brings fellowship with other believers, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from every sin. His blood points to His death for us. Our hope is not that we have made ourselves clean enough for God. Our hope is that God's Son gave His life to remove our guilt.
Then John warns against claiming that we have no sin. Such a claim fools us and shows that we are not facing the truth. So walking in the light cannot mean reaching a state where we no longer need forgiveness. It means we stop pretending and keep turning toward God. Don't miss the comfort here. The light that shows us our sin also shows us the Savior who cleanses us. We can be honest because Jesus is enough to meet our deepest need.
Honest Confession, Faithful Forgiveness (1 John 1:9-10)
9 But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, forgiving us our sins and cleansing us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us.1 John 1:9-10 · NET Bible
Confession means admitting our sins to God without trying to excuse them. John promises that God forgives and cleanses those who confess. God is faithful: He keeps His word. He is also just: His forgiveness does not ignore evil. Jesus' death, already mentioned in verse 7, provides the basis for our cleansing. Forgiveness is a gift paid for by Christ, not a reward for finding the perfect words.
Verse 10 gives a serious warning. When we deny that we have sinned, we are not only fooling ourselves. We are calling God's judgment about us false and refusing His word. Spiritual growth begins with agreeing with God, even when that agreement is painful. I want to encourage you to bring your sin into His light. You do not need to defend what He calls wrong. You can admit it, turn from it, and trust His faithful mercy.
- Fellowship — Sharing life with God and with others who belong to Jesus.
- Confession — Honestly admitting our sins to God instead of hiding or excusing them.
Where do you need to stop making excuses and trust God's grace enough to walk in His light?
Father, thank You for making Yourself known through Jesus. Help us admit our sins honestly and trust the cleansing His death provides. Teach us to walk in Your light and share life with Your people. Amen.
