1 John 4
Knowing the Truth and Living in Love
John teaches us how to recognize teaching that comes from God and how to live in the love God has shown us. True faith holds firmly to Jesus Christ and grows into real love for other people.
Walking Through 1 John 4
Test What You Hear (1 John 4:1-3)
1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that refuses to confess Jesus, that spirit is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now is already in the world.1 John 4:1-3 · NET Bible
John begins with a warning given in love. Believers must not accept every message that claims to come from God. False prophets were already spreading through the world, so the church needed to test what it heard. Here, testing the spirits means checking the spiritual message behind a teacher's words.
The central test concerns Jesus. A message from God's Spirit honors Jesus Christ as the One who truly came as a human being. John is not offering a magic phrase that makes every speaker trustworthy. He is calling believers to hold to the real Jesus, not a version shaped by false teaching. Denying Him reveals the spirit of antichrist, a spirit that stands against Christ.
I want to encourage you to listen carefully, not fearfully. A confident voice or a moving message is not enough. We must ask whether the teaching agrees with the truth about Jesus given through His apostles.
The One Within You Is Greater (1 John 4:4-6)
4 You are from God, little children, and have conquered them because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world’s perspective and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God; the person who knows God listens to us, but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.1 John 4:4-6 · NET Bible
John speaks tenderly to these believers as God's children. They have overcome the false teachers because God is at work within them. Their safety does not rest on being smarter, stronger, or more skilled in debate. God's Spirit is greater than the evil power working in the world.
In these verses, the world means people and ways of thinking that resist God. False teachers speak from that outlook, so people who share it welcome their message. A large audience does not prove that a teaching is true.
When John speaks about listening to us, he points to the witness of the apostles. These were the people Jesus chose to make Him known. Knowing God leads us to receive their teaching, which Scripture preserves for us.
This gives us both courage and direction. We do not need to chase every popular idea. We can rest in God's strength while staying close to the truth He has already given.
Love Begins with God (1 John 4:7-10)
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been fathered by God and knows God. 8 The person who does not love does not know God because God is love. 9 By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him. 10 In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.1 John 4:7-10 · NET Bible
John now calls believers to love one another because love comes from God. Being born of God means receiving new life from Him. That new life begins to show itself in the way we treat others. John is not saying that loving people earns us a place in God's family. He is saying that knowing God changes us.
God's love is not merely a pleasant feeling. He made it known by sending His only Son so that we could have life through Him. Jesus also became the sacrifice that deals with our sins and turns away God's right judgment against them. God's love takes sin seriously while providing the way for sinners to be forgiven.
Don't rush past the order here. We did not reach God first through our goodness or devotion. He loved us and acted for us. Our love is a response to His grace, not the price we pay to receive it.
God's Unseen Love Becomes Visible (1 John 4:11-16)
11 Dear friends, if God so loved us, then we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God resides in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we reside in God and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. 16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has in us. God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides in him.1 John 4:11-16 · NET Bible
Because God has loved us so deeply, we ought to love one another. No one has seen God in His fullness, yet His presence becomes clear through the love of His people. When John says God's love is made complete in us, he means it is reaching its intended goal. Love received from God becomes love shared with others.
John also explains why believers can be sure they belong to God. God has given them His Spirit. The apostles bear witness that the Father sent the Son to save the world. Those who confess Jesus as God's Son live in fellowship with God, and God lives in them. This confession is a real embrace of who Jesus is, not empty words.
I find steady comfort in the way John joins truth and love. We do not have to choose between them. Trusting the true Jesus teaches us to rely on God's love and to make room for others in our care.
Love Replaces Fear and Exposes Hate (1 John 4:17-21)
17 By this love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus is, so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears punishment has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he loved us first. 20 If anyone says “I love God” and yet hates his fellow Christian, he is a liar because the one who does not love his fellow Christian whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And the commandment we have from him is this: that the one who loves God should love his fellow Christian too.1 John 4:17-21 · NET Bible
As God's love reaches its goal in us, we gain confidence about the day of judgment. Our hope rests in our bond with Jesus, whose life shapes ours even now. We do not stand before God trying to buy His favor with enough good deeds.
The fear John describes is fear of punishment. God's mature love drives that fear away. This does not mean a believer never feels anxious or should stop honoring God. It means we can learn to trust His saving love rather than expect Him to reject us. Our love began because He loved us first.
John then makes the lesson very practical. A person cannot honestly claim to love the unseen God while hating a brother or sister who is right there. Love for God and love for His people belong together. I want us to take that seriously: worship cannot become a cover for bitterness. God's command calls us toward real, active love.
- Discernment — checking teaching against the truth God has given about Jesus.
- Love — seeking another person's good, shaped by God's gift of His Son.
Where do you need to let God's love shape both what you believe and how you treat someone?
Father, thank You for loving us first and sending Your Son to save us. Help us recognize what is true and remain faithful to Jesus. Grow Your love in us so that we trust You more deeply and care for others more fully. Amen.
