Finding Light in the Cracks
By Joseph Cutler

True resilience comes not from avoiding life's 'cracks,' but from recognizing how light, understanding, and new beauty can emerge through them, illuminating unexpected paths and fostering deeper connection.
I was walking through an old part of town on my daughter, Malerie's Senior trip in Hungary, past some buildings that have stood for a century or more. You could see the wear and tear — chipped paint, crumbling mortar, and in some places, little cracks running through the brickwork. It struck me that even in those seemingly imperfect places, something beautiful was happening. Sometimes, a tiny bit of moss or a wildflower had taken root, thriving in a sliver of sunlight that had managed to penetrate the old wall. It was a small thing, but it made me pause.
Life, I've noticed, has a way of leaving its own cracks in us. We go through seasons that are tough, experiences that leave their mark, and sometimes, those marks feel like flaws or weaknesses. We might try to hide them, to pretend everything is smooth and perfect. We often wish for a life without any cracks at all, a perfectly sealed and impervious existence where nothing can get in or out unexpectedly.
But what if true resilience isn't about avoiding those cracks, but about what happens because of them? What if the very places where we feel broken or worn are precisely where the light finds its way in, and even more, where it shines out? It’s not about welcoming hardship for its own sake, but recognizing that hardship, when it comes, can create openings we never anticipated.
I think of the words in the Psalms, like Psalm 34:18, which says, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." It’s not that God causes the brokenness, but that in our brokenness, He draws near. It's in those moments of vulnerability, when our defenses are down and our perfect façades are chipped away, that we often experience a deeper sense of His presence, a new clarity, or a fresh perspective. The light isn't just about comfort; it's often about revelation.
Perhaps those cracks are where our truest selves emerge, where we connect with others on a deeper level, or where we discover strengths we never knew we possessed. It’s where empathy is born, where wisdom is forged, and sometimes, where unexpected beauty takes root, like that wildflower in the old brick wall. It teaches us to be less rigid, more adaptable, and ultimately, more human.
So, as you go through your days, if you find yourself feeling a little cracked or worn, consider this: Where might light be trying to get in, or shine through, in your current situation? What new perspective or understanding might be available to you precisely because of a past difficulty? How might your 'cracks' actually make you more approachable, real, or even beautiful to others?
It's a different way of looking at things, isn't it? It's not about being grateful for the hard things, but about finding hope and purpose in their aftermath. It's about remembering that even in what seems like damage, there can be a profound opening for something good and true to appear. My Final Thought
The light doesn't avoid the cracks; it often uses them as its pathway. Our strength isn't just in what we endure, but in how we allow the light to transform the landscape of our lives, even—and especially—in the places where we've been fractured.

Verse 1 I saw an old wall, weathered and worn With chipped paint and mortar, where time had been born And in its deep lines, where struggle had etched A wildflower bloomed, a lesson it fetched We try to hide scars, pretend we're complete Wishing for pathways, perfectly neat But life leaves its marks, on heart and on soul Leaving us cracked, to make us feel whole? Chorus Oh, the light finds its way, through the cracks that we bear Not a flaw, but an opening, for grace to declare Where we feel most broken, a strength can arise A new understanding, reflecting in eyes God is close to the hurting, His presence we find Shining through darkness, leaving no one behind Verse 2 It's not for the pain, that we're grateful today But for what grows through it, along the hard way An unexpected path, a wisdom revealed Empathy deepening, a spirit annealed Perhaps in those moments, when defenses are down Our truest selves emerge, without a false crown Connecting with others, on grounds raw and real Allowing His purpose, to graciously heal Chorus Oh, the light finds its way, through the cracks that we bear Not a flaw, but an opening, for grace to declare Where we feel most broken, a strength can arise A new understanding, reflecting in eyes God is close to the hurting, His presence we find Shining through darkness, leaving no one behind Bridge We don't seek the hardship, nor welcome the sting But when the walls crumble, what beauty can spring From fractured foundations, a clearer new sight Revealing His goodness, in radiant light Final Chorus Yes, the light finds its way, through the cracks that we bear Not a flaw, but an opening, for grace to declare Where we feel most broken, a strength can arise A new understanding, reflecting in eyes God is close to the hurting, His presence we find Shining through darkness, leaving no one behind
