Let's Understand the Good News
By Joseph Cutler

Let's understand the Good News.
There are some words Christians use so often that we can forget to stop and ask what they really mean.
But if someone stopped us and asked, “What exactly is the Gospel?” I wonder how many of us could explain it simply.
Maybe we'd say, “Jesus loves you.” That's certainly true.
Maybe we'd say, “Jesus died for your sins.” That's central to it.
Maybe we'd say, “You need to believe in Jesus.” That's true too.
But the Gospel is a story. And like any story, it makes more sense when we understand where it begins.
It begins with God. A good God who created us to know Him.
Then something went terribly wrong. Sin entered the story. And sin did more than make people imperfect. It separated us from the God who created us.
We couldn't fix it ourselves. So God did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He came to us in Jesus.
Jesus lived the life we could not live. He gave His life on the cross. And then He rose again.
That's why Gospel means good news.
That's a very different message.
And I think when we really understand the Gospel, it changes how we see God. It changes how we see ourselves. It changes how we understand grace. It changes how we think about salvation.
So don't rush through this one. This is the foundation beneath everything else we're going to learn.

Verse 1 We use the words, we sing the songs But do we know where it belongs? This message whispered, known so well More than a phrase, a truth to tell It starts with God, His loving hand A perfect plan for every man To walk with Him, to know His grace Before sin darkened every space Chorus It's the Gospel story, good news from above Of a holy God and His relentless love We couldn't bridge the chasm wide So Jesus came, for us He died Then rose again, a victory won The work complete, forever done This changes everything, makes us truly free This is the Gospel, for you and for me Verse 2 Sin broke the bond, a bitter cost A connection sacred, deeply lost No strength in us to mend the way No human hand could save the day But God in love, He saw our plight Stepped into darkness, brought the light In Jesus Christ, the story turns A lesson that our spirit learns Chorus It's the Gospel story, good news from above Of a holy God and His relentless love We couldn't bridge the chasm wide So Jesus came, for us He died Then rose again, a victory won The work complete, forever done This changes everything, makes us truly free This is the Gospel, for you and for me Bridge More than "Jesus loves you," more than "believe" It's the grand design, His grace we receive From creation's dawn to the cross and grave His powerful rescue, His heart to save Final Chorus It's the Gospel story, good news from above Of a holy God and His relentless love We couldn't bridge the chasm wide So Jesus came, for us He died Then rose again, a victory won The work complete, forever done This changes everything, makes us truly free This is the Gospel, for you and for me Outro The good news, the good news Changing me and changing you.
